Pedestrian hit by sheriff’s lieutenant suffered 14 broken ribs, crash report shows

The man was in the crosswalk at Ninth and Monroe and had the right of way; Lt. Andrew Henton was cited for failure to yield.

A pedestrian struck downtown by an off-duty Sangamon County sheriff’s lieutenant on Sept. 24 suffered 14 broken ribs and a lacerated kidney, NewsChannel 20 reports, citing a traffic crash report obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

Lt. Andrew Henton was turning east onto Monroe Street from Ninth Street on a green light in a sheriff’s squad car about 8:45 a.m. when he hit the man, who was walking north in the crosswalk and still had the right of way, according to the report. Dash camera video released by the sheriff’s office shows Henton stopping, checking on the man and radioing for help. Springfield police investigated and cited Henton for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk; the sheriff’s office said the footage showed he was not using his phone or computer.
